Tahoe - An Introduction Tahoe is a great vacation destination, with a wide range of activities. Famous for its winter sports, Tahoe hosted the 1960 winter Olympics, and is applying to host the games again in 2018 Favorite winter sports are downhill skiing, cross country skiing, snow shoeing, tubing, and snowmobiling. The views of Lake Tahoe from the top of several of the ski resorts are absolutely spectacular For summer vacationers there are beautiful beaches on the shores of Lake Tahoe. Swimming, boating, and water skiing are all popular, or take a trip across the Lake to Emerald Bay aboard the paddlewheeler "Tahoe Queen" There are several sites of local interest, including a visitors center with a "cross-section" of a typical trout stream, and the historic Tallac site, the vacation destination of choice for the rich and famous of 1900 Nearby Desolation Wilderness has a wide variety of day hikes for people of all abilities, and several Mountain bike trails are famous throughout Northern California. There is a wonderfully peaceful family bike trial that runs through the woods and alongside the beaches parallel to highway 89, heading towards Emerald Bay Take a ride on the Gondola to the top of Heavenly mountain for spectacular views of South Lake Tahoe and the Lake Of course, all year round there are the State Line Casinos hosting shows, restaurants and the full range of gaming
